Predators Love Chicken

So we have been losing some birds here and there.

The neighbor too.

Then a few nights ago the neighbors girls were on a bike ride with the family dog when he got snatched up by coyotes.

Needless to say in this drought and heat wildlife is hungry.

So we got a game camera among other things (electric fence, solar powered motion sensor lights and tons of guns.) and this is what we saw from last night getting into my neighbor's chicken coop and then some coyotes coming by an hour or so later just to sniff some feathers.

So now we have game and fish coming out to hopefully trap the cat or whatever they deem necessary. Oh and we got some serious hail last week.

Cheers!

Also available: scallions, radishes, carrots, spring green garlic, arugula, chard, cilantro and chives.

Spring Time at Revolution Farm

Revolution Farm in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at 7,200 foot elevation. Growing food for the community.
The hens are laying about three dozen eggs a day now.

Radishes are just one spring crop we have coming in right now.

The big egg was a double yolker!
Seedlings getting a head start on the others we will direct seed soon.

D.I.Y. Greenhouse

All the lumber and windows were free. This whole project cost us less than $100.
Holding a window in place.

Planting Asparagus Crowns

Drying out the crowns after shipment.
Planting a bed of Jersey Supreme (2 yr. old crowns)

Alltogether we planted three beds of asparagus. Two beds of the larger, healthier looking Jersey Supreme, and one of Purple Passion.

Starting the Revolution From Seed

About a thousand seeds germinating all at once.

Tomato plants

We rebuilt our old greenhouse to better suit our needs. A post on how it was built to come soon, and a few hundred seedlings to be moving in to it as soon as the door is hung on the hinges and all the cracks and gaps get sealed up.

Sprouting Grains as Poultry Feed

Wheat berries after three days of sprouting
We start the sprouting process by soaking grain in water for twelve hours.
Whole, non-GMO grains and peas get started daily on the farm in five and three gallon food grade plastic buckets. We typically soak two - three buckets each night. Then draining those and rinsing along with the other sprouts. After three days the sprouts are much larger and germination is occurring.

Winter Time at Revolution Farm

Low tunnels growing arugula, spinach, cilantro, chard, carrots, onions, lettuce and more.

Cisterns for water catchment in background.

Three of our low tunnels after sweeping off last nights snow.
